Success Story: Conjoined Twins
In 2004, I was introduced to Mohamed and Ahmed Ibrahim, formally conjoined Egyptian twins brought to the US for a specialized 26 hour surgery to separate them. Several months after their surgery, they were discharged from the hospital and began PT. My life as a pediatric physical therapist was forever changed the moment I became Ahmed and Mohamed's PT.
Their journey after separation was incredible. They learned to roll, crawl, and walk after intensive PT 4x/week. They became like family to me and will never be forgotten. The twins shaped me into the therapist I am today. Neuroplasticity and the brain's ability to adapt is amazing. There was no "textbook" treatment for these two. I used everything that I had learned in my NDT (neurodevelopmental) certification and doctoral schooling and applied it. There was continual analysis and reevaluation of treatment. I progressed as a therapist as they did as my patients. Guiding them to take their first step was unbelievable. They are a true miracle.
I also had the privilege of being the physical therapist for the Italian conjoined twins. These loving, smart twins hold a special place in my heart and made a huge impact on me. This was an extra challenging experience as a therapist because they were never separated under my care.
